A large number of toilets and urinals, constructed by the Municipal Corporation (MC), have been either encroached upon or demolished by miscreants. The issue came into light when a team of estate officials, led by Estate Officer Sushant Bhatia, visited the Division C area where some mischievous persons were found possessing an MC toilet. They had converted it into a residential quarter
There are several toilets, which have been encroached upon by homeless people or vendors. Meanwhile, residents have been facing inconvenience due to the pathetic condition of public toilets
As per the proposal under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the MC had to construct public toilets at a distance of every 500 metre. There was also a proposal to construct community toilets in areas where sewerage was not available.
Another survey has been conducted to identify the requirement of community toilets. Despite tall claims, the MC has failed to provide proper toilets. Even after having funds under the Centre sponsored schemes, toilets are yet to be constructed
Five container toilets were also installed by the Municipal Corporation under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan last year. Toilets have been installed in Chheharta, Gujjarpura, Majitha Road, IDH market and Shakti Nagar. Ironically, these container toilets have also been locked
Rajan Preet, a resident, said, “Most of the toilets installed under Swachh Bharat project are either locked or not in use. A large number of markets, especially in the walled city, don’t have toilet. The MC should show concern towards this problem
Meanwhile, Estate Officer Sushant Bhatia said that he would get it checked and further action would be taken accordingly
